Exploring the Realms of Psyche, a Jungian Passage
Through the Seasons of the Soul
(poster)

 A Discussion Group
Led by Dina Fahey, MC, MFT (CA)

Pre-registration is required.

8 Thursdays
7:00pm-8:30 pm
February 7, 14, 21, 28
and
March 6, 13, 20, and 27

In central Tucson, near Country Club and Pima
Actual address will be provided registrants.

This small group follows the program of self-discovery in Ms. Fahey’s book  Kindling Your Sacred Fire.  The group is based on a personal growth system inspired by the explorations of Carl Jung and the unfolding process of nature itself. The group will discuss a chapter a week and will include optional sharing of responses to the practical and expressive exercises suggested in the material.

Participants will practice four positions or “seasons” adapted from Carl Jung’s strategies for transformation that “make the unconscious, both personal and collective, conscious.” Each group member will (1) heighten awareness of the present moment, acknowledging what is  (“summer”); (2) confront the shadows (“autumn”); (3) clarify personal patterns, imagery, and archetypes, discriminating the mythic dimension and design of our lives (“winter”); and (4) cast off old ways and shift into a new way of imagining one’s life, creating both personally and with the transcendent (“spring”).  The program is designed for people from a wide range of backgrounds who are motivated and willing to encounter their souls.

 Cost

 For the 8 sessions:  Members $85   Non-Members $115
and $12 for the book  Kindling Your Sacred Fire.

Modern Woman in Search of her Authentic Self
(poster)

Study Group for Women
Facilitated by Jeaneen Vogel, Ph. D.

Pre-registration is required.

 Saturdays 1-3pm
February 9, March 8, and April 12, 2008

 Near Ft. Lowell and Columbus
Actual address will be provided registrants.

 C. G. Jung has said, “We could translate individuation as ‘coming to selfhood’ or ‘self-realization.’”  He describes the self as the archetype of wholeness, including consciousness and everything in the unconscious— personal and collective.  June Singer, Jungian analyst, writes, “Moving toward the self is the seeking of understanding of the authentic or true self.  When we are living from the true self/soul, we easily find ways to find agape love to contribute our gifts to the world.”

In this program for women, Jeanne Vogel will explore the work of several authors who have written about this process.  She will discuss ideas and concepts that offer potential assistance to women with 21st century awareness, who are engaged in this process of seeking their true self, and ultimately, self-empowerment.

Session 1—Self-growth.  Participants will look at self-growth, as “the time when the ‘fake self’ becomes uncomfortable and one seeks new answers by searching for the true self.”  (D. W. Winnicott, 1963)

Session 2—Self-actualization.  This is defined as “the discovery of the creativeness of the true self and recognizing it as the unifying center.”  (R. Assagioli, 2000, and P. Ferrucci, 2002) The shadow and other unknown facts needing to be brought to consciousness will be examined.

Session 3—Self-empowerment.  The time when one knows one’s true identity, solves problems creatively, and gives “gifts” to the universe.  One’s resources are equally used for one’s own benefit, as well as others.  (M.F. Basch, 1988, and W. Tiller, 1998.)

This weekend’s program will begin with a dream incubation Friday evening. Dr. Bernard has taken an ancient practice and created a modern version to help you solve problems in any area where you have an impasse. There are problems that simply cannot be solved through our own resources. Helpful powers slumber in the deepest strata of our nature and can come awake and intervene. Dream incubation is a way of preparing yourself to receive this assistance. Bring to the workshop any issue, concern or question that you would like help with.

On Saturday Dr. Bernard will introduce you to a group dream interpretation process that is the most dynamic, dramatic and effective approach to dreams that he has ever experienced. This process expands Jungian and Freudian dream work, and it places the expertise in the hands of lay people and the dreamer, instead of a professional. You will also learn the connection between art and dream work, how to get at the heart of a dream very rapidly by finding a dream’s theme and also how to look at dreams as questions.

For the lecture please dress comfortably; bring a mat, blanket and/or pillow, as the dream incubation activity will occur on the floor.

Arthur Bernard, M.F.C.C., Ph.D., specializes in using dream work to help solve problems. Conducting hundreds of workshops nationwide in dream incubation and interpretation has enabled him to take the mystery out of dream work. He has a delightful teaching style, a keen sense of humor, and creates a supportive atmosphere where learning is playful as well as challenging. He was founder of the Dream Center in Sherman Oaks, and feels a close kinship with Jung because of his Jungian analysis and what Jung has revealed to him in his dreams. Dr. Bernard’s book, God Has No Edges - Dreams Have No Boundaries, will be published this summer.

In 1913, Jung resigned as a lecturer at the University of Zurich with a mass of doubts.  At that moment of uncertainty, Jung began a self-experiment:  to understand his fantasies and the contents of his unconscious.  The expressive arts were helpful in Jung’s journey.

Continuing on the theme of “search for soul,” started in our September program, this panel presentation will be on the individual’s “search for soul”.  The panel will be moderated by Rocky Stone, who will speak briefly on Jung and show slides of  Jung’s art work.  The panel members are:

Linda J. Denniston, who will speak on Sandplay Therapy as developed by Dora Kalff, and the natural healing function of the imagination.

Rebecca Keogh will discuss her mission as a storyteller, using myth and fairytales to introduce Jung’s principles of the collective unconscious, and the individuation process. This effort can touch the powers that lay dormant in one’s personal and collective unconscious.

Charles Gillispie will present a completed writing exercise based on a dream.  Using Jungian technique, Charles will investigate the concepts of dream amplification and the collective unconscious.

Additionally, The Southern Arizona Friends of Jung welcome back Dr. Julie Miller to present the Saturday workshop entitled  “Creating Your Own Sandtray.”  This will provide an opportunity for participation in an expressive arts activity.  See further details for Saturday’s program below.

Sandtray Therapy is an experiential therapeutic tool.   It uses a small tray of dry or wet sand, in which clients use miniature objects to explore
and better understand their inner world.  This workshop will give further information how about Sandtray might be used in a therapeutic setting
and provide an opportunity for participants to make small objects from polymer clay, bake them, and create their own Sandtray.  The tray, sand
and polymer clay will be provided.  At the close of the workshop, participants will have their own tray which can be used for play or meditation.
As the tray is used, more objects of meaning can be added and the tray can be rearranged.

All nature lives in polarity, light and dark, creation and destruction, how do we then understand our own polarity? What does it mean to us to go on the journey to meet with our Animus and find that we are both frightened and drawn to this figure? It is difficult for the Animus to become a partner within where we have no connection with the feminine, and in this tale Beauty has lost her connection with the feminine. We will begin this discussion by the telling of the original tale of "Beauty and the Beast", and then we will explore the role of the various Animus figures that appear in this tale.  What they mean to Beauty and what they mean to us in the present day. We will include the different interpretations that have been made of this tale by other writers (this includes interpretations that treat this tale as a journey of the couple, a journey of the man to meet with his anima, etc.)

Jung tells us "It is in a moment of collapse, that we sink to the final depth. . . It is a surrender of our own powers, not artificially wilted but forced upon us by nature." We will wonder/ponder does the negative Animus, who berates women, who undercuts and devalues woman, have a role in pushing women to discover and become aware of the source of this inner critic?  If so, could this actually be a positive  aspect of the negative Animus? This is the journey Beauty takes and  the one we will discuss.

Gabrielle Guedet, Ph.D., MFT is a clinician in private practice in Sacramento, CA.  She is a graduate of Pacifica Institute in Carpinteria, Ca.  She wrote her dissertation on the tale Beauty and the Beast, and has continued to research this tale and its connection with the inner life of women.  She is an Adjunct Professor at Alliant International University, Sacramento, CA and also the co-chair of the AAMFT-CA Sacramento district. She has given presentations on the tale of Beauty and the Beast at the Analytic Psychology Club of San Francisco.
