Short Presentation on Reading C. G. Jung’s Red Book
Nancy Solomon went to Los Angeles to hear a series of lectures and dialogs by Sonu Shamdasani, translator of the Red Book, and James Hillman. These programs were organized by the Philemon Foundation and Pacifica Graduate Institute. Solomon will report on the exhibition of the actual Red Book at the Hammer Museum at UCLA. Also on display were two of the black books, paintings by Jung, and a series of his mandalas presented in chronological order. She also brings back suggestions on reading the Red Book. Two copies of the facsimilie edition will be on display.

Joseph Colloquia Third Colloquium for SAFOJ, Sunday 16 May 2010, 7 PM – 9 PM
Series on Jungian Perspectives
on Addiction and Compulsion
Addictive
and Compulsive Fantasy and Enacting:
Cost:
$25 for members, $35 for non-members Preregistation form HERE. In the first two Colloquia of this SAFOJ series, we have explored some Jungian insights into addiction and compulsion in two ways. First, we looked at the relationships between Jungian views on psychological development and 12-step views of healing from addiction. Second, we discussed some alchemical and gnostic images of dis-integration and re-integration as they related to processes of addiction and healing from addiction. In this third and final Colloquium, we will discuss the archetype of initiation – a core primordial motif in all human development towards fuller maturity and wholeness. Our discussion will provide a way of deepening our understanding at what “addictions” of all kinds aim. I hope to develop a view of addictive feelings and behaviors as (often unconscious) attempts to short-circuit the gradual process, typically over many years, always involving necessary and intentional suffering, of growth into the full realities of self, of world, and of life as it is. The archetypal motif of initiation is the psychical ground from which this human growth into wholeness emerges. This will be our theme. Suggested Reading: Joseph Henderson, Thresholds of Initiation.
